Kimberly Cowan is a multimedia artist focusing primarily on hand-carved sculpture and ink drawing. She studied fine arts at Colorado State University for the beginning of her academic career before changing her studies towards the path of language and science.
She has worked with many materials and media over the years but found a true resonance with stone sculpture. She works exclusively with hand tools and utilizes only the barest assistance from an old rotary tool for final polishing. This direct, tangible connection to the stone allows her to feel the personality hidden in each piece.
In the 2-D realm of ink and watercolor painting, her subjects are primarily rooted in nature. Inspired by the works of Ernst Haeckel, Cowan relishes drawing and painting the detailed portraits of insects, arachnids, and microscopic organisms.
